Ptarmigan Cirque Trail Loop Hike
|Ptarmigan Cirque Trail Loop Hike is a moderate 4.3 – 6 km trail that leads to some spectacular views. Follow the One Way loop as posted anytime but specifically now to keep the social distancing in check while we are in this COVID pandemic.
Where to start
If you are early enough to park in the parking lot you will have access to restrooms and maps. If not the next best place to start the hike is by parking on HWY 40 close to the trailhead crossing sign, which will save you just under a km hike.
The hike
The hike starts off in the trees winding up the mountain side. For the first 45 min it is a bit a climb where may prove difficult for some. The best way to conquer it is by stopping and taking breathers along the way. It is a short hike so really no rush in getting up their fast. Take your time because it is so worth the effort.
Out from the trees it opens up to the alpine meadows where the elevation becomes slighter and easier to endure. The meadows are full of blooming flowers in early summer, perfect for flower lovers and a colorful alpine view.
There are 3 main waterfalls cascading from the cirque as well as many water features meandering through the meadow.
Two falls near the top which is a great opportunity for photos and lunch enjoying the panoramic view of Ptarmigan Cirque and the Highwood Meadows Cirque across the valley. The other can be seen on the path down on the left by a wooden bench overlooking the canyon.
If you choose you to scramble to the top of the cirque (bowl) which is approx another 1km that leads you to a higher a viewpoint and a chance to see skiers ski the bowl before the snowmelt mid-Aug or follow the loopback down across the creek.
The hike is approx 2.5 – 3 hours depending on how long you visit the cirque and the beautiful surroundings. I highly recommend this hike for the spectacular scenery comprising of waterfalls, alpine meadows, creek, cirques, canyons and so much more.
Hope you enjoy this hike as much as we did.
If your still up for another hike, just down the road South on HWY 40 outside Peter Lougheed Prov Park there is Cat Creek Falls Hike which is a nice short hike with a stunning waterfall to finish your day.
