Lake Louise Gondola Ride And Hikes

Lake Louise Main Lodge and Gondola

Where is the Lake Louise Gondola?

To get to the Lake Louise Gondola ride is just off HWY #1, East of the Lake Louise townsite on Lake Louise Dr 60km West of Banff.

The Summer sight-seeing Lake Louise Gondola ride is only open from June to mid-Sept. The price of a lift ticket is $49.99 however, Alberta residence pay $39.99 when purchased online.

The 14-minute scenic sight-seeing lift travels over a wildlife corridor where it’s possible to catch a view of bears, moose, deer, lynx, and goats although a deer grazing in the red foliage was all we captured.

Once at the summit, you can choose to explore the scenic viewing platform or stop in for lunch or a beverage at Whitehorn Bistro & Patio which overlooks the townsite and famous lake surrounded by Lake Agnus, Big and Little Beehive, and the Devils Thumb viewpoint hikes.

Hiking The Viewpoints

There are 3 trails to discover at the top, the Kicking Horse Pass Viewpoint, Pika Trail, or the Ptarmigan Valley Viewpoint.

The Kicking Horse Pass Trail

This trail is a 1.7 km trail off to the left of the gondola. A gravel road ascends up the colorful meadow which leads left to a rocky viewpoint. This viewpoint has a panoramic view of the Rockies, Lake Louise townsite, and Lake Louise lake in the distance.

Pika Trail

Pika is a 2.5 km hike using the Ptarmigan trail which loops the treeline before heading to the Ptarmigan summit.

Ptarmigan Valley Viewpoint

Ptarmigan trail is a 3.4 km trail with a pretty steady jaunt up to the summit. However, the trail continues on to some backcountry trails. When using these trails, be sure to be back in time for the lift down. These hikes are not recommended by Lake Louise as it is off the ski hill property so use personal discretion.

This is the highest lift on the ski hill if skiing in winter.

The scenery beyond the summit is breathtaking as it is true backcountry, a goal to discover one day.

Interpretive Center

Explore the life-sized display of wildlife species along with pelts, skulls, claws, and even fake poop in case you wonder who dropped them. lol

Conclusion:

The Lake Louise Gondola really is a great experience as a tourist or an avid hiker like myself. Being a wildlife corridor the premises at the top is protected by an electric fence to keep tourists safe when exploring the viewing platform, lift exit, and entrance as well as the path to the Bistro and Interpretive Center.

Exploring the trails it is highly recommended to carry Bear Spray as well as other Backcountry Essentials with you.

These trails were steeper than first thought in which we decided to leave the trekking poles in the vehicle. Thank god for 2 bamboo poles which came in handy.

Prices are a bit high so be prepared to put a dent in your wallet however you only live once for an experience like this.

The Ceaser’s were a nice refresher as well as a meal in itself with a thick slice of maple bacon, 2 asparagus, pickled pepper, and 2 olives. CHEERS!!
