Evan Thomas Creek Waterfalls Hike

Evan Thomas creek waterfalls hike is really a gem, however not so hidden as popularity has grown over the past 2 yrs with more people taking up hiking to free themselves from the chaos of the issues of the world today.

Km may vary on the trails used and how much one walks around. The loop trail will take you up to the ridge and around back to the original trail. Take the creek trail straight up and back both approx 11-12 km.

The creek bed streams can run high depending on the winter runoff, which results in hard-to-access falls in summer. Winter is the best and easiest time to view the falls close up.

Once on the trail, it is a wide well-trafficked path that winds through the trees. At approx. 1.6 km there will be a junction. Take the right, the horse trail, and follow which crosses a bridge leading to the creek bed. Continue up the creek following the well-beaten trail.

Snowshoes can be used although can be a hindrance crossing the rope and chain section.

The Trail To The Falls

Once you hit the creek as seen in the photo above there will be many paths jutting out everywhere. Just past the log take a left and follow up the canyon. The two right trails take you to the Wedge Pond connector.

First creek crossing

There are a couple of creek crossings, which may require a little hop, skip, and jump to avoid the water. The trail crisscrosses the creek at various points however most were easy and frozen over.

The Hike

Though Evan Thomas waterfall hike is easy, many people choose to only hike up to Moonlight Falls which I believe is about 7 km return. Still a very rewarding hike regardless of whether you make it to the Green Monster or not.

To get to the Green Monster the big daddy of them all, there is a section with chains and ropes to help cross a narrow steep section however really isn’t much of a deterrent as it’s a great time to challenge yourself. Hikers with dogs for the most part have no issues though it is something to consider bringing a pet on the trail.

What To Bring?

Of course, I highly recommend packing all 20 Back-Country Essentials on any hike as one never knows what can arise on a hike. Trekking poles and a good set of Crampons will definitely add comfort to this hike.

The Frozen Waterfall Cave

To the left of the Green Monster, there is a very narrow opening to enter the cave. It’s a bit slick going up to the entrance and getting back down. Use caution not to slip. On busy days there is a lineup to get behind the falls in the ice cave so remember to be kind as well as get in and out asap to allow others to enjoy it as well.
