Devil’s Thumb Hike From Chateau Lake Louise
|The Devil’s Thumb hike from the Chateau Lake Louise is an 11.9 km hike. Once arriving at the Teahouse and after ascending the switchbacks to the Big beehive you have hiked 10.3 km. Another 1.6 of some difficult terrain will lead you to the top of Devil’s Thumb.
Is Devil’s Thumb challenging?
For the experienced hiker, Devil’s Thumb won’t be much of a challenge but for a novice like me and others I came across the hike proved more challenging than expected.
For the most part walking the mountains edge on a narrow path was a bit scary in areas however the two main challenges I came across were at a rock climb area which peaked my fear but quickly passed as I conquered the wall of rock.
Conquered my fear… YEAH!!
Another was an area on the backside as you cross the slide area about 400 meters from the top. We had a group of 4 and as we crossed 2 men were rambunctiously coming down causing rocks to slide therefor narrowly missing us all which was a very scary thought.
This area is a bit tricky and the safest way is to cross quickly and to keep far left of the slide area. Although it was very slick due to people sliding down on their feet and bums it still is the best option.
Descending this area wreaked havoc for many and many turned around at this point so close to the top as the risk wasn’t worth it. Two of us stayed back while the other two went on to the summit.
The views
The views on this hike were absolutely incredible from everywhere. On the front side while ascending you have panoramic views of Lake Agnes as well as Lake Louise not to mention Devil’s Thumb.
As you hike the south side you are welcomed with a beautiful glacier cirque where the glaciers are so thick and look as though they will crumble from the cracks caused by the heat of the noonday sun. Hearing them crack while walking the hike was a bit like thunder rolling in, was actually cool to hear them crack and pop however thankful they are far enough away if they were to give way.

The summit
The summit was not as scary and narrow as it looks from below. However, caution at the top is of the upmost importance on any summit as accidents happen. Never take chances just to get the most liked social media shot.
The view here at the summit is breathtaking. Looking down on Lake Agnes and Lake Louise as well as the Big Beehive. To think the hike started at the hotel in the distance is so rewarding and is such a happy moment as another mountain conquered.
