Banff’s Sundance Canyon Loop Hike

10.83 km loop hike

Sundance Canyon Loop Hike

This Sundance Canyon hike has been on my bucket list for some time now and I must say it did not disappoint. The hike is considered to be a 9km trail in and out however the Sundance Canyon Loop hike is a 10.83 hike. Continue down the backside for more panoramic views from above.

We started from the Cave and Basin parking lot and crossed over towards the pathway immediately. This took us to the horse trail which led to the lower Sulphur springs boardwalk and connected back to the horse trail along the river where we continued on.

Bypass the pathway hike

Once reaching the main trail, there is a forested trail on the left that bypasses the well-trafficked trail. Choosing the trail may be a bit more tiring as well as losing out on some water views.

4 km Pathway to Sundance Canyon Trailhead

The scenic pathway is a photographers heaven with many reflection shots to be had with the gorgeous mountain ranges with the glass like waters below.

Sundance Canyon Trailhead

Approaching the Sundance canyon trailhead you will see a picnic area on the right where we were fortunate to see a Pine Marten frolicking around and posed for a photo.

There are also washrooms as well as a bike rack which is a great idea to bike in on that long pathway.

The trail to the falls

The trail to the falls is absolutely stunning with many water features to be had. Bridges criss-cross the creek that meanders through the canyon where the streams and trails are covered with green moss glowing from the sunlight.

A raging waterfall welcomes you once you round the bend of the rocky gorge leading to a bridge above. The path becomes a bit adventurous with rock stairs winding around to the top. Such a pretty sight.

Beyond the falls

The top of the falls is the end of the road for many, taking the same route back downstream.

If one chooses to carry on the path ahead will come to an end with a trail winding down the backside just past the stump. A nicely forested switchback trail has a few places to look out over the Trans-Canada Hwy and the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

Below is the view from the first viewpoint

At one switchback, straight ahead is a lightly trafficked path leading up to a spectacular scenic viewpoint. This was a wonderful place for us to grab a snack and refresh taking in the panoramic view of the canyon below. Not for the faint of heart.

The end of the trail

This was definitely a long hike, however, considered to be easy except for the climbing of stairs which could be difficult for some with challenges. Hope you enjoyed our journey and if you’d like to see more follow me on Instagram @internethousewife for more photos and adventures.

Conclusion:

With any hike it is imperative to be prepared and carry some Back-Counrty Essentials with you. Sundance Canyon among others are known for frequent bear sightings.
