At Home Self Hair Cutting Tools And Tips
|In the year 2020 our lives have changed due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
Businesses have closed to prevent the spread of the virus, including salons. So what do you do when you need a haircut? Do you do it yourself or don’t you?
Personally, As a stylist, I don’t recommend doing hair yourself although there are exceptions. If you are just trimming bangs, ends or cuts using clippers it may be possible to get an OK result. Using these hair cutting tools and tips may help with the process.
Waiting for salons to reopen IS your best bet but Unfortunately, we don’t know when this pandemic is going to end. A couple of months won’t be a tremendous time to go without a cut however if it goes into months, a year possibly then it may not be a bad idea to chance it but having the right tools on hand is vital to prevent that DIY hair disaster.
Hair Fails
Hair fails happen more often than not. I urge you to proceed with caution. This is a funny video of hair fails but will also show what can happen. Leaving bleaching to the professionals.
Must-Have Tools Of The Trade
- Cape – Keep hair off your clothes
- Scissors – A good stainless steel pair. A MUST!
- Texturizing/Thinning Scissors
- Comb – A good cutting comb grips hair and firm hold
- Clippers – Clippers are great for short hair especially for men and boys. Guard sizes to the desired length.
- Clips – Always smart to section hair
- Spray water bottle – Keeping hair damp is key
- Mirror – A must to see what you are doing.
Buying good quality products is essential right down to the right combs. Cheap plastic combs, scissors bought at the local box store just don’t work. Products I recommend may not be tested but in my opinion, are of good quality. Must-have tools can be bought separately or as an All-in-one set.
Tools To Help Cut Hair
- AirCut Haircutting Systems – Built-in vacuum
- Creaclip – Learn, Clip, Slide and Cut
- Flowbee – Unfortunately due to high demand is no longer available at this time. The AirCut above looks to me as a great second choice possibly better than the Flowbee.
DIY Hair Cutting Tips
- Never cut above your fingers
- Pointcut into the hair. ( why good scissors are vital)
- Do not pull hair tight but use a relaxed grip
- Cut longer than desired, you can always go back
- Remember, hair shrinks when it dries.
- Section hair and pin.
- If bleaching, be sure not to over-process, Leaving bleach on longer than specified time could result in frying and damaging hair to the point of breakage.
- Do Not use general Multi-purpose scissors.
- Follow YouTube tutorials
- Bangs
- Long Hair Layers
- If you have a short layered cut I’d recommend waiting as this cut is tricky. Just do your bangs.
Best of Luck!!
