What is the Salal Berry?

The Salal berry has been around for thousands of years. First nations aboriginals used the berry for its medicinal purposes who ate them fresh or dried. Unfortunately, in the 20th Century non-aboriginals only admired the plant itself. Up until this point, the leathery shiny leaves were harvested for floral arranging and the plant used as ground cover for ornamental garden landscapes. The picturesque beauty of the glandular-haired urn-shaped pink and white flowers to the bluish-purple fruit fairs well in sun or shade gardens.

Why are we hearing of this now?

The Salal berry just never seemed to catch on, Although people were aware that the Indigenous people used the berry,  many still believed the berry was poisonous. A biologist at the University of Victoria was introduced to sample the extract and decided to do some research on this magnificent berry. What he discovered was fascinating.

How does Salal surpass Blueberries?

Sala berry is known to contain tannins which are abroad compound found in certain fruits, wine, coffee, teas, barley, squash, bean, nuts and some herbs giving some foods their bitter dry taste. Tannin has an acidic compound with water-soluble polyphenols which contain powerful antioxidants thus making salal berries 5 x higher in tannins and 3x higher in antioxidant powers than in blueberries that have been leading the pack.
