|You pick out a beautiful candle and bring it home to add beauty and aroma to your home. Then, unfortunately, after a few hours of burn, it tunnels and looks horrible and unattractive.
How to Fix Tunneling in Any Candle
I used a 24″+/- piece of tin foil. Fold in half and then lengthwise. Wrap it around the candle and fold in ends. The fold-down top is enough to let good airflow into not extinguish the fire. Depending on how bad tunneling is left burn from 15 min up to 1 hr. This should ensure your candle to continue to burn evenly throughout the life of the candle.
WHY does a candle burn unevenly? There are many reasons a candle will tunnel.
- Poor quality candle.
- Did not burn long enough on the first burn.
- The amount of wicks per diameter of the candle.
- Did NOT trim the wick to 1/8 before the burn and each burn thereafter.
These are 3 Top reasons. As I mention in previous blogs there are a variety of wax types. Paraffin, Soy, Bees Wax, Coconut Wax, Gel, and Palm Wax. The more natural the wax the more expensive. Some may contain a blend of waxes. Lower-grade paraffin candles are more likely to have tunneling than others of Soy type wax. Be aware of dangerous candles. Usually, low-cost candles found in dollar stores and dept stores. Avoid any that contain paraffin or metal core wicks.
The first time a candle is lit it should burn up to 4 hrs. The amount of time usually depends on the diameter. A 2″ 2 hrs, a 4″ 4hrs.#-4 hrs should be a max time to burn a candle to preserve the scent.
